Great Falls – Join First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park for a family-friendly educational event focused on the history and biology of Montana's elusive wolverine, led by FWP wolf-carnivore management specialist Sarah Zielke. Beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday March 28, visitors can enjoy hot cocoa, coffee, and other treats while listening to this fun presentation followed by a question-and-answer session.
The wolverine is a fierce and solitary carnivore that lives in the Rocky Mountains of Montana, including some of the remote areas of the Rocky Mountain Front north of Great Falls. Wolverines are tenacious and ferocious for their small stature, often confronting prey and foes much larger than themselves. Although they are immortalized in comic books as a superhero, less is known about the actual wolverines that live in Montana.
FWP wolf-carnivore specialist Sarah Zielke grew up in north-central Wisconsin in a small agricultural community where her first job was working on a dairy farm down the road from her house. In 2012, she moved to Montana where she started a wildlife volunteer position working with wolves. She received her bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Montana and gained a variety of experience working seasonal jobs for several years. In 2023, Sarah started working for FWP as the wolf-carnivore management specialist along the Rocky Mountain Front in Region 4. Her work includes projects with wolverines and monitoring other furbearing animals.
The free program will take place in the First Peoples Buffalo Jump classroom, and seating capacity is limited. For more information contact First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park at 406-866-2217, or email firstpeoplesbuffalojump@mt.gov.
