Visit Schramm Education Center for April Events

Make a visit to the Schramm Education Center south of Gretna, where educators have scheduled a variety of engaging events for the curious in April.

The center, located within Schramm Park State Recreation Area, is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and ages 4-12, and free for 3 and under.

A vehicle park entry permit is not required to park in the Schramm Education Center parking lot.

April offerings at Schramm are:

Little Saplings presents Groundhogs on April 1

Adults looking to explore the outdoors with their young children are invited to Little Saplings, a monthly early childhood nature discovery program.

The 2026 series, which occurs on the first Wednesday of the month, continues April 1 at 9 and 10 a.m. The topic will be Bats. The program is designed for children ages 2-5 and their adult caregivers. The cost is $5 per child and $5 per adult.

Celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day

April includes Earth Day and Arbor Day, so Schramm is going to celebrate with a day of art and activities inspired by those days.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 6, the Treehouse Classroom will be open for all ages to enjoy. Work on a group artwork project with recycled materials, write a letter to a tree or adopt a tree to observe throughout the year.

Spring Beginner Birding Hike

Beginner birders may listen and look for migrating songbirds and waterfowl April 18 on a guided, early morning hike on Schramm's river trail.

Bring binoculars if you have them, or binoculars will be available to borrow. This will be a one-hour hike along a flat, grass and dirt path. All ages and experience levels are welcome.

Meet at the shelter next to Pond A at 9 a.m.

Homeschool Hikes set for April 22-23

Homeschool families are invited to join an outdoor educator on a guided hike during the Homeschool Hikes program at 9 a.m. April 22 and 1 p.m. April 23. This month's theme is Mushroom Madness.

During the program, participants may ask questions, draw, observe, and make discoveries in nature. They will have the opportunity to observe local phenomena, plants, and animals while exploring concepts such as patterns, cause and effect, and structure and function.

Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared toward homeschool families and ages 5 and up.
