Community Pond Projects Approved

HELENA – FWP recently approved nearly $60,000 in funding for three projects to enhance angling opportunities at local ponds. The funding will come from FWP's Community Pond Program and is matched with $35,000 from outside sources.

The funded projects are located across central and eastern Montana:

  • At Deep Mill Pond (Yellowstone County), a new windmill aeration system will replace an old aeration system that failed in 2022.
  • At Medicine Stab Lake (Glacier County), an accessible ramp and fishing pier will be installed to improve angler access.
  • At Carter Ponds (Lewiston), two 500-watt electric air pumps will be installed to prevent winter fish kills.
  • At Hieronymus Ponds, an ADA-compliant fishing platform will be installed along the north end of the pond and a standard fishing platform on the west end.

These projects are intended to improve the angler experience through access and habitat improvements. FWP accepts applications for the Community Pond Program each year until Feb. 1. Application forms are available at fwp.mt.gov/aboutfwp/grant-programs/community-pond and from FWP offices.

Any individual or group with a project designed to enhance angling at a local pond may apply for Community Pond Program funding. Projects that address youth, family, education or accessibility are preferred. Applicants are encouraged to work with local FWP fisheries biologists, and public access is required.
