The Mule Deer Foundation appreciates the Administration's new efforts to strengthen the Western Big Game Seasonal Habitat and Migration Corridors Program initiated in 2018. The Make America Beautiful Again (MABA) Commission announced its new strategic initiative, MABA 250, which outlines key national priorities including voluntary land and water conservation, species recovery, and expanded access for America's hunters and anglers. With a strong emphasis on big game habitat conservation and connectivity, this continued investment is critical for mule deer, whose long-distance migrations depend on connected landscapes.
"The MABA 250 strategy represents meaningful progress for mule deer and the sportsmen and women who care deeply about their future," said Greg Sheehan, President and CEO of the Mule Deer Foundation. "Healthy migration corridors and seasonal habitats are essential to sustaining mule deer populations across the West. We appreciate the administration's commitment to advancing voluntary conservation and improving access for hunters."
These actions build on the foundation established by Secretarial Order 3362, which elevated the importance of conserving big game winter range and migration corridors. Continued investment in these priorities remains critical for mule deer, whose long-distance migrations depend on intact, functioning landscapes.
"Mule deer depend on habitat connectivity to complete their seasonal migrations," Sheehan added. "We are encouraged to see continued leadership and investment in science-based, collaborative conservation efforts that support habitat, strengthen herd resilience, and protect our hunting heritage."
The Mule Deer Foundation looks forward to working with federal, state, Tribal, and private partners to turn this investment into on-the-ground conservation success.
