The latest episode (#23) of Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast features an in-depth conversation with well-known Colorado fishing guide Landon Mayer on "Hunting Trout, River Etiquette, and Picking up 2,500 Pounds of Trash Annually." Fly Fisherman Editor and Publisher Ross Purnell explores Mayer's techniques for seeing trout, his angling adventures, and his on-going effort to keep our public lands clean. You can listen to the Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast, in partnership with Patagonia, G. Loomis, Mayfly Outdoors and Cigars International, on Apple Podcast, YouTube, Spotify, and at FlyFisherman.com.
Colorado guide Landon Mayer grew up in Colorado Springs and was mentored by his local fly shop (shout out to Angler's Covey) and local fly tier John Barr. He became a pro fly tier and one of the leading experts on sight-fishing for trout. In this episode of Loop to Loop Landon explains how to look for telltale trout signs—a hint of color, the noticeable "potato chip" of a brown trout's pectoral fin, or the giveaway of a ghostly shadow. He also explains why he is crazy about leeches, how he prepares for every day of fishing by tying at least a dozen flies as part of his routine, and how a golden dorado in Argentina changed his life. Ross and Landon also dive into the Clean the Dream project started by Landon and his friend Brandon Kramer 10 years ago. The annual event in 2025 had 300 volunteers that included 100 different families and 75 kids picking up trash from Colorado public lands.
"I've fished with Landon a bunch of times," said Fly Fisherman's Purnell, "and I can tell you there are very few people in the world who are as dedicated to the sight-fishing game as he is. To consistently catch big trout, you need to be a hunter, and that's what he is. It was a pleasure to chat with him about his upcoming article 'Becoming a Hunter' in the April-May 2026 issue (on sale March 3rd) and find out exactly what he's looking for when he's trying to spot trout."
