GREAT FALLS - Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks is notifying hunters and outdoor recreationists of changes going into effect at the Beartooth Wildlife Management Area (WMA) near Wolf Creek. Specifically, the caching of any items such as firewood, livestock feed (including hay), and all other supplies and equipment will no longer be permitted.
The changes are a result of WMA managers and law enforcement staff documenting several years of non-compliance with previous rules allowing firewood and livestock feed to be cached in advance of fall hunting seasons. Campers must now pack in all materials at the beginning of their stay and pack out everything at the conclusion of their stay. These changes will bring the Beartooth WMA in line with standard use rules for other FWP properties and will be in effect when the WMA opens at noon on May 15.
Encompassing over 35,000 acres, the Beartooth WMA is located near Wolf Creek in FWP Region 4. The WMA was purchased in 1970 to provide critical winter range for elk, mule deer and bighorn sheep as well as a wide range of public recreational activities including hunting, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, and wildlife viewing.
