Rugged Cross Hunting Blinds, LLC, a small business founded by two first-responder brothers, has achieved a major legal milestone in the outdoor products industry. On May 29, 2025, the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) ruled in favor of Rugged Cross, upholding all 19 claims of U.S. Patent No. 11,399,535 B2 following a challenge filed by DBR Finance, Inc.
The IPR (Inter Partes Review), initiated by DBR Finance—an entity led by Dan Reaser, former owner of Outdoor Product Innovations and Rhino Hunting Blinds—sought to invalidate Rugged Cross’s core patent. However, after months of legal scrutiny, expert analysis, and technical review, the PTAB concluded that every challenged claim was patentable. This decision affirms Rugged Cross’s status as the original developer and rightful patent holder of its innovative see-through mesh hunting blind technology.
“This was never just about a patent,” said Chris Seaton, co-founder of Rugged Cross. “It was about standing up for the American dream, faith, family, and the freedom to build something meaningful from the ground up. This decision proves that innovation and integrity can still win.”
Born in Service, Built for Hunters
Founded by brothers Chris and Tim Seaton lifelong outdoorsmen and public servants Rugged Cross was born out of necessity. Chris, a retired law enforcement officer, and Tim, a licensed contractor and career firefighter, couldn’t find a hunting blind that met their needs for durability, visibility, and weather resistance.
Together, they designed and hand-built the first prototype to use in the Florida wilderness with Chris’s son. What began as a custom solution for one family quickly transformed into a breakthrough product that would challenge industry norms.
“Our blinds are made to last, to see clearly, and to create memories between generations.” Tim Seaton
The result: a rugged, American-made blind that integrates see-through mesh technology now protected by four issued U.S. patents.
Taking a Stand Against Corporate Overreach
The IPR challenge was viewed by many in the industry as an aggressive move to stifle competition. But the PTAB’s final ruling not only protects Rugged Cross’s intellectual property, but it also sends a message.
“We’ve remained silent out of respect for the process. But this win isn’t just ours it’s for every small business fighting to survive to achieve the American dream” Chris added.
While this PTAB decision is a huge Victory, Rugged Cross continues to Defend its Patents in Federal lawsuits against industry giants including FeraDyne Outdoors and GSM Outdoors. The PTAB decision adds weight to these efforts, arming the company with greater legal authority in its fight to preserve innovation.
Acknowledgments and Commitment
Rugged Cross credits its victory to its legal teamRobert L. Wolter and Amber Davis of Wolter VanDyke Davis, PLLC for their tireless work, expert guidance, and belief in the mission.
The company also extends sincere thanks to its licensing partners, including Primos Outdoors (Double Bull Surround View), Millennium Outdoors, Old Man Tree Stands, Outtech, and True North, whose trust and partnership have helped bring the product to a national audience.
“This is a win for our families, our customers, and every hunter who believes in doing things the right way,” said Tim. “We never gave up. And we never will.”
An Open Door for Honest Collaboration
To those still manufacturing or distributing infringing products, Rugged Cross offers a path forward: “Our door remains open for fair licensing agreements and honest collaboration,” said Chris. “But let it be clear, we will not tolerate infringement. We are prepared to protect our patents and our legacy, no matter the opposition.”
