The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) invites recreational shooters to take aim at select public shooting ranges during Alabama’s Free Range Days. During these events, license and shooting range permit requirements will be waived, and new shooters will have the chance to get hands-on experience with firearms at no charge from certified instructors at the Barbour, Cahaba, Delta, Etowah, and Swan Creek public shooting ranges on the dates listed below.

National Rifle Association programs have experienced significant growth since 2008 thanks to an increased national interest in the shooting sports, personal safety and hunting. Demand for popular courses like NRA Basic Pistol and the female-focused Women On Target Instructional Shooting Clinicshave led to the NRA rapidly approaching 100,000 trained Certified Firearms Instructors and Range Safety Officers. Responsible for teaching and supervising safe shooting activities, their number has surged from 58,526 to 97,755 in just five years.

On Saturday, March 3, nearly 400 people residing in or near Sacramento and Miami will fill First Shots seminars co-sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation® and three target-shooting facilities in each area. This is the second leg of the First Shots program national tour to help big-city residents learn about their local and state procedures for handgun ownership. Last November, residents of Madison, Wisconsin, and Chicago also packed First Shots seminars to capacity.
