A portion of 796th Road north of Sherman Reservoir Wildlife Management Area in Sherman County is closed temporarily due to road construction. The county is repairing a washed-out culvert on 796th Road, with the closure extending from Sherman Trial 10 to at least County Road 480 Ave.

The state Game and Fish Department is allowing hunters with whitetail or “any” deer gun licenses in five units in western North Dakota the option of turning those licenses in for refunds. The decision is based on scattered reports of white-tailed deer mortality caused by epizootic hemorrhagic disease that began in early September.

A 16-year-old male from Chadron was injured in a dove hunting incident at about 6:45 p.m. Mountain time Sept. 6 on private property southwest of Chadron in rural Dawes County. The teenager was taken by his hunting party to Chadron Community Hospital with birdshot wounds to his face, torso, arm and hand.

EHD, a viral disease that’s often fatal to white-tailed deer, has hit some parts of the country extremely hard this year. In Pennsylvania, EHD has been confirmed in a handful of counties in the northwestern part of the state. The public is encouraged to report sick or dead deer, especially if several are found dead in the same area and the cause of death is not apparent.

This year, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is welcoming a new southeastern Oklahoma land lease partner in Herron Industries LLC, a family-owned timber producer with headquarters in Idabel. The new Herron Family Wildlife Management Area will be open this fall to Oklahoma residents after the Herron family agreed to a five-year lease.
