CHULA VISTA, California - USA Archery has nominated a strong duo to aim for gold at the Summer Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018, pending approval from the United States Olympic Committee. The U.S. team trials had archers compete in a 72-arrow ranking round and then the top-eight men and women advanced to round robin match-play. 

Trenton Cowles, the No. 1 ranked archer on the cadet recurve United States Archery Team, swept the event winning the qualification round and five of seven matches to lock up the men's spot for the Youth Olympic Games. 

"It finally feels like my hard work is paying off. The hours of shooting every day and hundreds of arrows are worth it," commented Cowles. "I want to do my best for the country to uphold that status and make everyone proud."

With the 2020 Olympics as his ultimate goal, Cowles added, "this is a great step because it's going to give me the same kind of pressure and experience that I hope to see at the actual Olympics and the trials leading up to the Olympics."

Catalina GNoriega, the recurve women's trials winner, will also represent Team USA in Buenos Aires. GNoriega climbed from a third-place qualification rank to the top of the standings, also winning five of seven matches. 

GNoriega was ecstatic at the team announcement. "At first when I finished, I didn't think I was going to make the team, and when they called my name I was shocked." On representing Team USA, she added: "It means a lot, being able to represent my country and be the only woman in the country who gets to go is amazing. I'm looking forward to shooting, competing and doing my best."
