Fort Hood Survivor Embarks on Inspirational RMEF Elk Hunt

WHO: Iraqi veteran, husband, father and Fort Hood shooting survivor Patrick Zeigler shares his tale of recovery, strength and determination on the Outdoor Channel TV series, "RMEF Team Elk."

WHAT: In November of 2009, the country was saddened by the mass shooting at Fort Hood near Killeen, Texas. Many people lost their lives or were greatly impacted in the aftermath of the tragic event. Among them was Patrick Zeigler. After being shot four times, including once in the head, Zeigler was told that he may never walk again – a fate he refused to accept.

Five years, several surgeries and hours of physical therapy later, Zeigler was ready to make one of his longtime ambitions come true: to go on a bona fide elk hunt. Enter the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF). They stepped in to make his dream come true by calling on their network of elk hunting enthusiasts from around the country and were able to set up a once in a lifetime adventure at the Express UU Bar Ranch in Northeastern New Mexico.

The hunt was filmed for a special episode, titled "An American Hero," which is one of the most exhilarating and heart-wrenching episodes from the fifth season of "RMEF Team Elk." RMEF's CEO, David Allen, also appears in the episode and highlights why the organization felt that it was imperative to honor Zeigler.

WHY: Through perseverance and sheer force of will, Patrick Zeigler's story shows how one man can overcome trauma and succeed. By being in nature and experiencing all the ups and downs that come with a hunt, Zeigler finds solace. The episode reminds audiences that faith, hope and the human spirit can help them overcome harrowing, life-changing events.
