Williamsburg, KY – Scholastic 3-D Archery hosted its 3rd annual S3DA Outdoor Target National Championship July 9th through 11th. The event was held at the Mermet Lake State Conservation Area, a beautiful waterfowl hunting area near Metropolis, Illinois. The number of participants for the Outdoor Target National Championship tripled for 2019 with over 300 archers competing from 64 clubs and 15 teams hailing from 15 different states. This year’s championship was held during some extremely hot weather conditions and the kids did a fantastic job of withstanding the heat. Due to the extreme heat conditions on Wednesday and a severe thunderstorm that afternoon, competition was postponed and resumed on Thursday morning.
The Outdoor Target competition consisted of archers shooting 6 ends of 6 arrows at the designated distance for their division and class. Archers had 4 minutes to shoot 6 arrows and for all arrows that were not shot within the respective time frame, the arrows were scored as zero. After all archers completed their qualification rounds, they were seeded into a bracket based on their qualification scores, to compete in head to head matches derived from the top 4 elementary archers, top 8 middle school 8 archers and top 16 high school archers. Olympic Recurve and Traditional archers competed on the 122 cm target face, while Fixed Pins and Open archers competed on the 80 cm 6-ring target face. All archers competed in their respective divisions and class to earn the title of “2019 National Champion.”
Many vendors, sponsors and partners were on hand to see the future of the outdoor industry in action. A successful event as this would not be possible without the dedicated parents, coaches, Regional/State Coordinators and many volunteers, who selflessly pledge their time to make sure these student archers are focused and safe, but most of all having fun while competing. This tournament could not have been made possible without the assistance of the staff at Mermet Lake State Conservation Area, S3DA National Outreach Director, Chris McDonald, S3DA Northern National Outreach Coordinator, Kim Rigney, GA S3DA State Coordinator, Jake Martin, all the Illinois S3DA staff and a host of other people.
S3DA Executive Director Jennie Richardson had this to say, “For our first standalone event, our staff did an outstanding job. The heat conditions were unprecedented, but everyone continued to work hard. The coaches and parents did an amazing job of making sure that all the kids were hydrated and keeping them cool during the competition. I am simply proud to be a part of something that I know is making a difference for archery.”
Students involved in S3DA are not only competing in archery, but they are spending more time with their families in other outdoor activities such as bowhunting, bowfishing, and clay target shooting. Everyone is seeing an increase in membership and families are getting involved at an unprecedented rate. The S3DA National Staff is already planning and looking forward to the 2020 archery season that will include more conservation activities and national events.
Started in December 2012 by the Scholastic Archery Association, S3DA has grown exponentially as a next step program to follow introductory programs offered as part of 4-H or the National Archery in Schools Program. S3DA addresses the need for a program to bridge the gap between beginning target archery experience and more advanced activities such as 3-D shooting and bowhunting. The program currently operates across the United States with hundreds of certified coaches serving thousands of young archers, grades 3–12.
