IHEA-USA Launches New Intro to Competitive Archery Course on LearnHunting.org

A modern pathway for new participants to stay engaged in shooting sports beyond Hunter Education.

The International Hunter Education Association–USA (IHEA-USA) is pleased to announce the release of its newest online training resource, Intro to Competitive Archery, now available on LearnHunting.org. Developed with funding support from Bass Pro Shops & Cabela’s and created in partnership with the IHEA-USA Ranges & Shooting Sports Committee, this course offers an exciting new way for learners to continue building skills after completing basic Hunter Education.

The course was designed in response to industry data, including a Southwick Associates study showing that 39% of Hunter Education graduates do not go on to purchase a hunting license. Providing these learners with accessible, skill-based next steps is crucial for long-term engagement in outdoor recreation.

A Welcoming Start for New Archers

Intro to Competitive Archery gives beginners an approachable introduction to a lifelong sport. The course explores the many sides of archery — from casual target shooting at local ranges to club programs and formal competitions — and breaks down the essentials in a friendly, confidence-building way.

Learners will gain a foundational understanding of safety practices, gear basics, scoring, and range etiquette, along with clear pathways for finding public ranges, joining clubs, and getting involved in community or competitive events. The course highlights archery not just as a skill, but as a sport that promotes precision, patience, focus, and personal growth.

“This course represents an important expansion of how we support new participants after their Hunter Education experience,” said Alex Baer, Executive Director of IHEA-USA. “By partnering with Bass Pro and our Ranges & Shooting Sports Committee, we’re providing a meaningful pathway for the 39% of graduates who don’t immediately pursue hunting, helping them stay connected to safe, skill-based outdoor activities.”

Supporting Recruitment, Retention, and Lifelong Participation

By giving new shooters a low-barrier entry point, the course strengthens agency R3 efforts, introduces new communities to archery, and keeps more students engaged in safe outdoor recreation even if they’re not ready to hunt immediately.

“We’re excited to share this resource with agencies, instructors, and learners across the country,” said Matt Clarey, Director of Business Development and Sales for IHEA-USA. “Courses like this show how industry partnerships can create next-step opportunities that benefit state programs, volunteers, and new participants stepping into the sport.”
