Connersville became the state’s 12th Bird Town Indiana this past weekend.  At a ceremony Saturday at the Hummingbird Migration Celebration, Connersville was recognized for their work in protecting and conserving bird populations and their habitats.  Mayor Harold Gordon accepted the designation and town signs that will be displayed for visitors entering the city.

Modeled after the “Tree City USA” program, Bird Town Indiana works with cities and communities to recognize the work and commitment by communities that plan, develop, and implement bird conservation strategies and education on a local level. Communities must meet a minimum of seven criteria to be considered for Bird Town status, including educational programming, conservation initiatives, and governance related to birds and their protection. “With the nearby Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary, Connersville was a natural fit for Bird Town Indiana status, said Brad Bumgardner,” executive director for Indiana Audubon.
