Westslope Cutthroat Trout and Arctic Grayling Restoration in Winslow Creek

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is proposing to restore and maintain native westslope cutthroat trout and Arctic grayling in Winslow Creek, a tributary to the Red Rock River in the Centennial Valley.

Historically, westslope cutthroat trout, Arctic grayling and mountain whitefish were the only salmonid species in the Centennial Valley. Introductions of rainbow trout eliminated the conservation population of westslope cutthroat trout.

FWP proposes to remove nonnative fish upstream of an existing fish barrier using rotenone for two consecutive years. After the treatments, westslope cutthroat trout would be repopulated using fish from nearby streams. Grayling will also be stocked using fertilized eggs or newly hatched fry. Repopulation efforts would occur over a two- to three-year period.

A draft environmental assessment has been published on this proposal. Public comments will be accepted through April 20. To view the assessment or learn how to comment, click here.
