Michigan wildlife photography class, art market, hatchery tours and more this spring at Wolf Lake

The Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center in Mattawan (Van Buren County) – now open for the season – will offer a variety of programs this spring, including a wildlife photography class April 27 and an art market May 4.

Visitor center hours of operation for the spring season, through Memorial Day, are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Introduction to Wildlife Photography

Saturday, April 27, 8 a.m. to noon

Designed for those with little or no experience in wildlife photography, this class will introduce photography basics, equipment requirements, how to photograph wildlife, and managing and editing photographs. Part of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Outdoor Skills Academy, the class is open to those 16 years of age and older.

Cost is $10. Register for Introduction to Wildlife Photography.

Art market

Saturday, May 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sponsored by the Friends of Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery, this event offers a chance to view and purchase fish- and water-inspired art.

Hatchery tours

Discover how the DNR raises millions of fish every year to stock in Michigan’s lakes, rivers and streams. Tours run approximately 30 minutes. Spring weekend hatchery tours, throughout April and May, will take place:

Saturdays: 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.
Sundays: Noon and 2 p.m. only

Other family activities

Visitors can see and feed a variety of fish species, take part in family scavenger hunts – with scavenger hunt backpacks that help families explore nature on the trails around the visitor center – or just hike the nature trails, open from dawn to dusk, for a unique opportunity to see birds, frogs, turtles, snakes and more.
