The International Hunter Education Association-USA (IHEA-USA) is proud to support Gun Storage Check Week (June 1–7), an initiative led by NSSF®—The Firearm Industry Trade Association—to raise awareness about the importance of secure firearm storage in homes and vehicles.
At IHEA-USA, our mission is to advance safe, ethical hunting and responsible firearm ownership through education, innovation, and partnerships. As the national leader in hunter education, we are committed to helping firearm owners—from first-time students to lifelong hunters—understand that safe storage is not just a recommendation; it’s a responsibility.
“We see Gun Storage Check Week as a powerful opportunity to help hunters and firearm owners across the country assess their storage habits and make changes that could save lives,” said Alex Baer, Executive Director of IHEA-USA. “Safety begins long before a hunt begins—it starts at home.”
Secure firearm storage is one of the most effective ways to prevent unauthorized access, accidents, suicides, and theft. From fast-access lock boxes to full-size safes, today’s storage solutions are built to support safety without compromising readiness.
Resources available at GunStorageCheck.org and ProjectChildSafe.org include:
- A Gun Storage Check Week infographic for reviewing storage practices
- A handout on firearm storage options
- Tips for firearm safety in your home
IHEA-USA encourages all hunters, instructors, families, and firearm owners to review these materials and take the Gun Storage Check pledge.
A second observance of Gun Storage Check Week will take place September 1–7 during National Suicide Prevention Month to continue this critical conversation.
