Oklahoma: New State Record Smallmouth Buffalo

Hugh Newman of Broken Bow caught a monster 66 lb. 3 oz. smallmouth buffalo in Broken Bow Reservoir on rod and reel using line testing just 8 pounds.

The fish hit a swimbait, Newman said. The fish is a new Oklahoma state record for the species. It could also be a potential line class world record if Newman submits it to IGFA and if the line tests at 8 pounds or less--the current record for the class is just 38-3. The all-tackle world record is 82-3 for a buffalo caught in Athens Lake, TX.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife reports the lake is also producing good action on largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass on Alabama rigs, plastics and spinnerbaits around creek channels, points and standing timber. Channel catfish are aso biting well on cut bait, punch bait and worms around coves and creek channels.
