RMEF Seeks Controller

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, a hunter based non-profit wildlife conservation organization, seeks a detail-oriented individual for a leadership role on our accounting team. Responsible for timely and accurate reporting of financial information, safeguarding of RMEF assets through the implementation and monitoring of proper internal controls, compliance with state and federal financial reporting and related laws, ensuring integrity of financial information in RMEF databases, overseeing budgeting and forecast processes, and financial analysis and decision support for the CFO and executive team. This position provides leadership and support to the Finance and Accounting Department. B.S. Degree in accounting or business administration is required. CPA designation required. Must have ten years progressive experience in a business environment with five years of experience in public accounting, corporate accounting, not-for-profit accounting or related field. Job Summary:

Responsible for timely and accurate reporting of financial information, safeguarding RMEF assets through the implementation and monitoring of proper internal controls, compliance with State and Federal financial reporting and related laws, integrity of financial information in RMEF databases, financial analysis and decision support for the CFO and executive team. This position also oversees the budgeting and forecasting processes. The Controller also assists the CFO with business and financial analysis as needed. This position provides leadership and support to the Finance and Accounting Department.

Essential Functions:

1. Provides a high level of leadership for accounting and finance staff and support for the organization in relation to business decisions and financial analysis.

2. Responsible for management and monitoring of all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.

3. Works closely with other departments to ensure adequate financial and accounting support is provided. Develops and modifies reports as necessary to accommodate requests and provides relevant data as requested. Provides data analysis and financial/operating metrics.

4. Plans and directs the preparation of annual budgets and monthly forecasts.

5. Reviews and evaluates fiscal performance compared to budget and forecast, and analyzes related variances and metrics.

6. Oversees issuance of accurate and timely financial statements that comply with current accounting principles and financial reporting standards.

7. Responsible for preparing and issuing timely and accurate internal financial reports to senior management and board of directors.

8. Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates a system of internal control processes and procedures to ensure the integrity of all fiscal functions. Tests controls periodically to ensure integrity.

9. Evaluates and advises on the financial impact of business planning, new programs, and other business strategies as requested.

10. Assists with analyzing financial aspects of business processes, identifies issues, and recommends changes to enhance systems and processes.

11. Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions.

12. Develops and maintains standard operating procedures on tasks the position oversees. Trains other department staff on these standard operating procedures.

13. Evaluates the effectiveness of accounting software and provides recommendations on changes if necessary. Develops and provides training to Finance & Accounting staff on accounting software and reporting functionalities. Serves as the lead in the department on accounting software.

14. Creates reports and presentations as needed.

15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision of Others:

Supervises various positions within the accounting department. May oversee temporary staff and independent contractors as needed.

Additional Responsibilities:

Present at organizational meetings as necessary to review financial and accounting reports/data/analysis/metrics.

Train RMEF staff as necessary on accounting software and reporting functions.

Education and Experience:

B.S. Degree in accounting or business administration is required. CPA designation required. Must have ten years progressive experience in a business environment with five years of experience in public accounting, corporate accounting, not-for-profit accounting or related field. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

1. Knowledge and support of the RMEF’s mission, goals, and activities.

2. Must have a demonstrated and thorough knowledge of accounting practices, principles, theory and methods; must have knowledge of not-for-profit accounting, IRS regulations, budgeting & forecasting, long-term financial planning, cash flow management, and internal control procedures.

3. Must have excellent analytical skills, excellent problem-solving skills and a good understanding of finances and strategic goals of the organization.

4. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact with volunteers and employees as a team member and establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with all contacts. Must be comfortable and effective presenting information to a diverse group of individuals.

5. Ability to anticipate needs and assess problems and take appropriate action with little guidance and supervision.

6. Demonstrates a high level of professionalism and deals with all information in a confidential manner.

7. Requires excellent organization skills and attention to detail. Must be flexible and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

8. Must have very strong computer skills – requires high level of use of excel, and an understanding of accounting databases. Experience in Oracle is preferred. Must be able to create reports upon request and understand the overall data management within accounting database.

9. Ability to effectively lead and manage staff. Ability to be viewed as a leader by staff throughout the organization. Must be able to be respected and trusted by volunteers, fellow employees and the Board of Directors.

10. Ability to provide advice and guidance to the CFO on matters affecting fiscal, accounting and generally related operational policies of the foundation.

Physical Demands:

The employee must sit or stand for long periods of time; use a computer terminal; reach forward and to the side; bend from both standing and sitting position; and lift items weighing various pounds, including some heavy lifting. Priorities may require some work over 40 hours per week. Some travel may be required.
