Illinois S3DA Hosts 3-D Regional

Williamsburg, KY – Illinois S3DA hosted the 4th 3-D Regional Tournament of the 2019 season in Carmi, Illinois. The tournament was located at the private residence of Carmi-White County Archery, Assistant Coach, Eric Holson. The wooden and hilly terrain of the property provided for a great mix of shot types from up-hill to down-hill and even across a pond. All the kids were excited about the course set-up. The Principal of Carmi-White County Jr. High School, Bart King, came out to the event and was given a tour of the course and an explanation of the S3DA rules. Mr. King relayed that he was very impressed with the course and proud of all the youth participants. Illinois S3DA had a total of 74 archers representing 4 clubs and 6 teams competing in the event.

Mother nature held off the rain for the first 3 hours of the tournament. Even though the rain did start to fall as the last archers started the course, it did not dampen their spirits. Most participants finished the course damp, but still had a smile on their faces. The rain let up just long enough to award medals to the top finishers in each class.

Illinois State Coordinator, Jim Sharp stated, “The Carmi-White County Regional was very well ran. Everything was organized and I was proud of the way our Illinois clubs and teams stepped up and helped each other on the range. This course was a little more challenging than most courses, as it had some shots across a pond and very steep down hill shots. The kids thoroughly enjoyed it. Now we prepare for a 3-D and Outdoor Target regional on May 25th.”

Started in December 2012 by the Scholastic Archery Association, S3DA has grown exponentially as a next step program to follow introductory programs offered as part of 4-H or the National Archery in Schools Program. S3DA addresses the need for a program to bridge beginning target archery experience and more advanced activities such as 3-D shooting and bowhunting. The program currently operates across the United States with hundreds of certified coaches serving thousands of young archers, grades 3–12.
