If you’re a Hoosier, you probably won’t even have to pack a suitcase unless you want to play more than one day—and if so, there’s a hotel just steps away from the first hole.

According to golfadvisor.com, The Fort Golf Course at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis is tops in the U.S. for layout, as voted upon by its readers. Ranked No. 2, by the way, is the Black Course at Bethpage State Park in New York, which has hosted two U.S. Opens in the last 20 years. The Fort hosted The Big Ten Conference women’s golf championship in 2015 and 2016.

The Fort’s 18-hole, par-72 course is noted for its rolling terrain and tree-lined fairways, and is consistently ranked among the top public golf courses in Indiana.

The original golf course was built in the 1930s when it was part of Fort Benjamin Harrison, a U.S. Army post. The course was later redesigned by Indianapolis golf architect W.H. Diddle. After the DNR acquired 1,700 acres of the decommissioned military operation in the 1990s to develop a state park, famed golf course designer Pete Dye was hired to create the current award-winning layout.

Just nine miles from downtown Indianapolis, The Fort course is adjacent to the Fort Harrison State Park Inn Resort at Fort Harrison State Park, which offers convenient stay and play options.
