Responsible for leading technical support services for New Product Development, maintains quality standards for engineering drawings, test methods, and Engineering Change Orders (ECO's). Leads and directs the work of assigned technicians and/or Engineers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directing all work activities of drafting, checking, test engineering, engineering change order (ECO) personnel as well as establishing goals, monitoring results, and taking actions as necessary
  • Working closely with other areas such as product engineering, marketing, sales, supply chain, human resources, training and payroll
  • Responsible for the daily management of engineering functions including:
    • Department staffing and training
    • Project management
    • Quality Control
    • Inventory Control
    • Scrap Reduction
    • Process Improvement
    • Workflow Management
    • Personnel attendance
  • Supporting product development initiatives including ESL, EPL and PPL activities as needed
  • Provide technical resources for capital planning and CEP development
  • Ensuring effective employee relations; providing employee coaching and development; making employment decisions; resolving employee issues through problem resolution
  • Balancing quality, productivity, cost, safety and morale to achieve positive results in all areas; working to continuously improve in all areas
  • Managing departmental performance measures, including visual controls and providing regular progress reports to Product Engineering Manager
  • Participating in and providing training and development
  • Assist in maintaining and controlling departmental budget

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

Complete all necessary training as required by assigned department and position

Participate in and follow all company initiatives

Participate in continuous improvement projects (Kaizen events, 5S, etc.)

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering along with a minimum of 5 years' experience in a Product/Process Development role with a demonstrated track record. MS Engineering discipline preferred.
  • Demonstrated team building and leadership skills
  • "Out of the box thinker" must be key driver contributing providing engineering support
  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Exceptional understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance) per ASME Y14.5-2009
  • SolidWorks proficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to apply proper dimension/tolerances to engineering drawings
  • Demonstrated experience with tolerance stack analysis
  • Demonstrated experience with firearms test methods and execution of testing protocols
  • Solid knowledge of basic metrology equipment
  • Microsoft Office proficiency (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Competent in firearm design with specific knowledge of machining, MIM, PIM, and stamping capabilities
  • Manage diverse, simultaneous projects of varying complexities
  • Strong relations management, strategy development, project management, problem solving and change management skills
  • Professional and positive approach, self-motivated, strong in building relationships, team player dynamic creative with the ability to work on own initiative
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

  • Safety glasses with side shields when on factory floor
  • The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear
  • All employees are required to apply ergonomic correctness to all job tasks
  • May be required depending on position: 
    • Annual vision update in Medical Department
    • Involvement in the hearing conservation program
    • Involvement in the lead surveillance program
    • Wearing of safety certified shoes/boots
    • Participation in the stretching program

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Normal office environment conditions
  • Within the Smith & Wesson manufacturing facility, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting
  • Work environment is similar to most manufacturing operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lighting
