Affordable 3-Hour On-Water Training Courses June 29 and August 3

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – Want to learn the basics of powerboating or brush up on your skills? The nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Watertogether with Prince William Marina offer a choice of four fun on-water powerboat training courses: Intro to Boating (both for single engine and twin screw vessels), Women Making Waves, and Precision Docking and Boat Handling, Saturday, June 29, and Saturday, August 3, at the marina’s location at 12849 Gordon Boulevard, Woodbridge.

All courses are three hours long and affordably priced at $149 per person. The Intro to Boating and Women Making Waves courses are taught aboard single engine powerboats and cover shifting and steering, basic docking, open-water handling and basic navigation. Intro to Boating is offered both dates at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. An Intro to Boating course for twin-screw vessels is offered on June 29 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The ladies-only course, Women Making Waves, offers the same Intro to Boating curriculum and is the perfect opportunity to spend a half-day learning boat-handling techniques in a supportive environment. It’s offered on both dates at 9 a.m.

Precision Docking and Boat Handling covers 180-degree turnarounds, docking on both port and starboard sides, departing from a dock, and how to use the S.C.A.N. (Search, Concentrate, Analyze, and Negotiate) method. It is offered on both dates at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Class size is limited to four students per vessel, ensuring each student gets sufficient time at the helm under the watchful eye of a U.S. Coast Guard-certified instructor.

The goal of the BoatUS Foundation and Prince William Marina courses is to address the high costs typically associated with at-the-helm training, making hands-on boating education more accessible. The courses also offer area residents the chance to try out recreational boating and give boaters the opportunity to brush up on their boat-handling skills.

Space is limited. Must be 18 years or older. To sign up for a course or seek others, go to BoatUS.org/On-Water.
