Williamsburg, KY – The Scholastic Archery Association continued its mission to successfully bridge the gap between beginning archery programs and target archery by hosting the 7th annual S3DA 3-D National Championship at the Mermet Lake State Conservation Area in Metropolis, Illinois on July 11th through 13th. This year’s championship was held following the 2019 Outdoor Target Nationals, so all the kids were excited to get into the woods and out of the blazing sun. The 2019 event featured nearly 900 archers all vying for their chance to be crowned a National Champion. Held in collaboration with the Archery Shooters Association (ASA), prior to the McKenzie ASA Classic, the 2019 tournament happened nearly a month later than usual due to schedule conflicts. However, the ranges were at maximum capacity and despite weather related issues was hugely successful. The archers hailed from more than 91 clubs and 22 teams from 18 states. The archers and their families took part in not only the tournament but also some special events that were held such as the Pope & Young North American Big Game Challenge, the QDMA Family Whitetail Challenge and the Whitetails Unlimited Longshot Challenge.
The Pope & Young North American Big Game Challenge and QDMA Family Whitetail Challenge each featured 10-target ranges that parent/student teams could compete in. Not only were plaques and certificates given for these events, but drawings were also held from the student/parent teams that competed for 2 special hunts at Pape’s Victoria Crossroads a 3,600-acre quality deer managed reserve featuring more than 60 food plots as well as trophy bass fishing. The Whitetails Unlimited Longshot Challenge was new for 2019 and featured kids aiming for a small dot on a 3-D target much farther than their normal range distances. Archers who competed in this event were awarded with an ice cream onsite for hitting the dot and then entered in a drawing for a 3-D target.
Many vendors, sponsors, and partners were on hand to see the future of the outdoor industry in action. A successful event such as this would not be possible without dedicated parents, coaches, and Regional/State Coordinators who volunteer their time selflessly to make sure that these student archers are focused and safe, but most of all are having fun in the outdoors. Mike Tyrell and the Archery Shooter’s Association (ASA) crew deserve a huge debt of gratitude, as this event would not be possible without their assistance. Mike Tyrell did the facilitating during the S3DA shoot-downs for each class and division, as he does during the ASA competition. S3DA is thankful for their partnership with ASA and their continued support of this program. “It was great to see the energy and fun that the kids displayed while participating,” added Mike Tyrell, President of the Archery Shooters Association. “ASA is proud to play a small part in the growth of S3DA, which is having a tremendous impact on youth and their families through archery. We look forward to seeing its continued growth.”
I am always amazed at the unbelievable sportsmanship demonstrated by all the archers regardless of their skill. These athletes are extremely humble, but at the same time they have a fiery, hungry, competitive side. I have been around all types of sports and no other sport can hold a candle to the sportsmanship demonstrated in archery,” stated University of the Cumberlands Head Coach, Kris Strebeck.
S3DA is also grateful for Easton Technical Products which donated gift certificates for a dozen Easton Superdrive 23 or Carbon One arrows, as well as Easton World Cup bow cases to the 3-D National Champions of each class and division. These bow cases feature a natural design to allow the case to expand outwards as more gear is stowed in the numerous storage compartments. This event concluded the 2019 S3DA Competition Season and S3DA has already begun planning for a bigger and better 2020.
Started in December 2012 by the Scholastic Archery Association, S3DA has grown exponentially as a next step program to follow introductory programs offered as part of 4-H or the National Archery in Schools Program. S3DA addresses the need for a program to bridge the gap between beginning target archery experience and more advanced activities such as 3-D shooting and bowhunting.
