To celebrate the International Year of the Salmon, NOAA Fisheries has collaborated with the educational tech app, Agents of Discovery, to launch Sea-Run, GO!, a game that teaches youth and the young at heart about wild Atlantic salmon and other migratory fish that inhabit the rivers and coasts of New England.

Become a Special Agent

Similar to the popular Pokémon GO app, Agents of Discovery provides educational “missions” with unique geo-triggered “challenges,” where players learn on the go. On our Sea-Run, GO! “mission” players become special agents who investigate the world of wild Atlantic salmon and migratory fish.

Get Moving

Using a specially adapted curriculum, teachers and informal educators can use this educational app to bring Sea-Run, Go! to their classroom setting. Similar to other mobile games, Sea-Run, Go! gets students moving and learning. They discover facts about endangered fish, fish life cycles, local ecosystems, and learn how they can become active participants in endangered species conservation as they move around the classroom completing each challenge. The benefits (and fun) of Sea-Run, Go! go beyond the classroom. The Woods Hole Science Aquarium in Woods Hole, Massachusetts recently added this mission to their new Atlantic Salmon exhibit. NOAA Fisheries Greater Atlantic Regional Office in Gloucester, Massachusetts also has this mission located in it’s lobby. If you complete the Gloucester mission during weekday office hours (M-F, 8 a.m - 4:30 p.m.), you can also contact staff to receive an embroidered badge of completion!

During the International Year of the Salmon, our partners on the Great Lakes are also celebrating the ecology, history, and importance of salmon with two new Agents of Discovery “missions.” If you’re visiting Vermont, learn more about salmon by checking out the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge Mission and the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum IYS Mission.
