Gregg Ritz: Customizing your caliber and ammunition for the game you hunt
Is there a one-size-fits-all option when it comes to big game rifles and ammunition? Gregg Ritz, host of “Hunt Masters” on Outdoor Channel,joins The Revolution this week with an in-depth look at matching your caliber and ammunition to the game you are pursuing. Gregg says that 10 years ago, if you wanted a premium bullet with the accuracy that today’s rifles can deliver, then that ammunition would have to be handloaded. However, now you can purchase factory ammunition that shoots sub-inch, right off the shelf with a wide variety of bullet selections and calibers to match your game. Cartridge, bullet style, recoil, supersonic or standard – there are a lot of different things to consider when choosing the right box off the shelf. Gregg says that hunters really need to think about the game they will be hunting and work backwards from there. Illustrating his point, Gregg talks about his upcoming moose hunt and says his selection is based on the size of the animal he’s hunting, which cartridge will more likely give him a pass-through shot, something that can break bone, and when it comes to the bullet, a monolithic that isn’t going to come apart. With whitetails though, Gregg says the game changes. Unlike moose, whitetails don’t require as much strength and durability from a cartridge in order to knock them down. Instead, he says you want to look for something with more rapid expansion. Gregg will talk about hydrostatic shock and how the bullet selection directly relates to the energy that is delivered from that bullet, into the animal in order to kill them quickly, cleanly and humanely. Gregg will also talk calibers for both moose and whitetail hunting. While other calibers can certainly get the job done, Gregg says that he is taking a .375 to hunt Yukon moose. Already familiar with the area in the Yukon he’ll be hunting, he is anticipating thick brush, a lot of willows and very small windows of shot opportunity so he wants something with a lot of energy. When it comes to whitetail hunting, Gregg says he’ll be using the 6.5 Creedmoor. An increasingly popular choice, Gregg will talk about the benefits to this incredibly efficient caliber selection.
He’ll also highlight the importance of regular practice, and not just hitting the range to sight in your rifle. While he has fired one-million plus rounds, Gregg says that he still practices every weekend and stresses how imperative it is to learn how to shoot in field situations, not just from a bench. He’ll explain how he trains with a purpose, shooting not only from different positions, but also imitating real life scenarios like a rushed shot where you are out of breath and have only seconds to acquire your target. Derrick Ratliff: Revolutionary New Caliber & Rebarreling
If you love hunting and shooting and you have an active pulse, then chances are you’ve heard of the 6.5 PRC from Hornady. This new cartridge has garnered a lot of attention and Derrick Ratliff, President and Founder of
Horizon Firearms, joins us this week for a look at this new offering, plus a lot more.
Derrick and the team at Horizon Firearms are very familiar with the 6.5 PRC, as they were one of only six builders originally listed by Hornady as builders of this new up and coming caliber. The 6.5 PRC holds almost 30% more powder than the 6.5 Creedmoor and Hornady offers it in two factory loads – the 147grain ELD Match and a 143 grain ELD-X. From a 24-inch barrel these loads have reported muzzle velocities of 2,910 fps and 2,960 fps. Derrick says that these numbers are relatively conservative when compared to those that some hand loaders are achieving, seeing numbers closer to 3,025 fps out of a 24-inch barrel with the 143-grain round. Derrick says he has been hunting with the 6.5 PRC since last November and likens it to a high-power Creedmoor, without a significant increase in recoil. Comparing the performance of the 6.5 PRC to the 6.5 Creedmoor, Derrick says that his PRC with a 22-inch barrel is faster than his 27.5-inch Creedmoor, highlighting how even after losing 5 inches of barrel you can still get impressive results. He’ll explain why this caliber is quickly gaining traction, and especially among sheep hunters.
Switching gears, Derrick will talk
rebarreling. In addition to building custom rifles, Horizon Firearms also offers rebarreling which gives the factory rifle you already own, a semi-custom performance with the existing action. He’ll talk about the rebarreling process which involves truing the factory action and trigger, replacing the barrel with one that has been hand lapped and contoured to your specifications, bedding the action in the stock and then test shooting the rifle for groups. Although it’s not entirely custom, Horizon Firearms still guarantees their rebarrels to shoot .5 MOA. Derrick says that rebarreling is a great way to dip your toe into the precision gun world, from a budget perspective. You get a turn key rifle back with precision components that are fit correctly with a nice barrel. He says it’s also a great way to try a different caliber and will explain the different options available to those who may be looking to change up their caliber.
