QUWF is working with the Outdoor Fund 45to create better habitat for other species of quail across the country such as Mountain Quail and California Quail in the west and Bob White, Blue quail and Montezuma quail in the south west. “The Fund Partnership provides great results for so many additional species with the right planning and monitoring thanks to the vision of Johnny Morris” stated Nick Prough, Chief Wildlife Biologist of QUWF.

Bass Pro Shops Cabela’s Outdoor Fund Gets on the Ground with QUWF and the Battle for the Bob White Quail and other Quail Species.

Buffalo, MO: The battle to restore Bob White Quail to the landscape is real. Since the 1980’s depending on which research report you use, populations have crashed throughout its landscape range as much as 88%. Some states have given up trying to restore the iconic bird but the battle continues in various locations where the habitat, and most important, long term landowner involvement, is fighting to keep the populations. “Maintaining the 6 oz guardian of grasslands is a delicate balance of needed habitat, weather conditions and predators” explains Craig Alderman of QUWF. QUWF has developed a rough formula for habitat work, it takes 40% habitat, 40% weather and 20% predator management to balance a healthy environment. At any point any one of the three can be thrown into absolute turmoil, severe weather hammers all populations and is the most unpredictable. QUWF continues to lead all other national conservation organizations in bob white quail restoration acres and on the ground, long term results.

“The support of the Bass Pro Shop Cabela’s Fund greatly helps us with the most critical portion, educating and continually working with private landowners over the long term” points out Alderman. Private lands represent the best opportunity to preserve the successional management needed to give the quail a chance with an estimated 93% of all lands in private ownership. Native warm season grasses, portions of open ground, good cover, brooding and bugging are all critical needs of the habitat. “One-time work at creating habitat falls very short as nature has her own rules and moves to change very quickly, it takes dedication, continual work and monitoring to make sure the results are moving forward for the quail” Craig states. Good habitat also buffers severe weather changes, and helps with predator management. Predators alone are normally not the sole cause of quail population declines.

QUWF is also working with the Outdoor Fund to create better habitat for other species of quail across the country such as Mountain Quail and California Quail in the west and Bob White, Blue quail and Montezuma quail in the south west. “The Fund Partnership provides great results for so many additional species with the right planning and monitoring thanks to the vision of Johnny Morris” stated Nick Prough, Chief Wildlife Biologist of QUWF.

“We also wish to extend our thanks to all those shoppers who “Rounded Up” at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s helping create and maintain this Fund. We at QUWF want to you to know we care about every individual penny and will guide its use to the best possible outcome for wildlife habitat, clean streams, with healthy wildlife and fish populations” expresses Craig.
