Site Selection for Planting with Chestnut Hill Outdoors

Mast orchards are an effective and popular way to attract and hold more wildlife on your land. However, if you want them to be more productive, remember the 5 Ps: Proper Planting Prevents Poor Performance. Plan before you plant by selecting the optimal site for each specific variety of tree or shrub.

Pick a location with good soil drainage. Most mast-producing trees and shrubs prefer well-drained, sandy-loam soils but will grow on other soil types with good drainage. Avoid areas with soil that stays saturated for long periods, such as creek bottoms or low areas that stay saturated during snowmelt in spring.

Avoid frost pockets where cold air or late frosts settle at the bottoms of valleys as unseasonable frost may damage blossoms and fruits. Seek areas with good air circulation such as on the top or side of a hill.

Pick a location with good sunlight. In general, that means open areas. Old, abandoned fields make great places to establish mast orchards. If you have food plots, plant trees along the edges, you can even plant in the forest, provided you pick tree-fall gaps or canopy openings where the mast trees will have sufficient sunlight above.

In addition to seeking the optimal site for each specific variety of mast-producing trees and shrubs you plan to plant, consider figuring out which types will do best in the areas where you want to plant.

Don't worry if you're not sure how to determine that. The folks at Chestnut Hill Outdoors do more than sell you plants. To ensure you receive the maximum productivity from their products, they also provide sound advice and instruction on a range of things including picking the right site for your tree and shrub varieties, or determining which varieties are best suited to your plant hardiness zone, regional climate, soil conditions and site-specific characteristics.

Soft and hard mast bearing trees and shrubs are available from Chestnut Hill Outdoors in a range of size containers depending on species and variety. Most will bear fruit in their second or third year and eventually be tremendous producers of mast when other food is lacking in nutrition or supply.
