MADISON - The burning question of spring is not "when's the last frost?" but rather "which chubby entry into the second annual Fat Bird Week contest will take the crown?"
People will answer that question May 2-9 when they vote daily for their favorite bulbous bird in Wisconsin Fat Bird Week, a bracket-style elimination tournament.
The contest is hosted by the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin and SOS Save Our Songbirds. While people "weigh in" with their votes, the organizations will be sharing fun facts about Wisconsin's native birds and how to keep them fat and healthy. Organizers hope that while people are having fun with the voting, they will also take a minute to learn about window collisions, planting native plants, bird-friendly coffee, and going birding during the Great Wisconsin Birdathon.
Eight contestants have waddled into this year's Wisconsin Fat Bird Week bracket:
• Neckless Northern Cardinal
• Dark-eyed Junco in the Trunko
• Enormous Eastern Bluebird
• Spherical White-throated Sparrow
• Rotund Ruby-throated Hummingbird
• Pudgy Pine Warbler
• Round Yellow-rumped Warbler
• Well-fed Yellow Warbler
To see all the contestants, sign up for voting reminders, or vote starting this Friday, visit WisConservation.org/FatBirdWeek. |
