Buffalo, MO: Getting our youth outside to enjoy the experience of fishing and learning about the resource itself creates a stewardship empowerment our youth can carry forward. Using the resource is wonderful, the thrill of a top water bass exploding, a rainbow trout on light tackle, the pure fun of crappie fishing, or just the experience of clean waters, all are part of it. However, teaching our youth how to preserve clean streams and rivers through hands on experience, builds the long lasting stewardship of conservation and all resources for the future. “The Bass Pro Shop Cabela’s Outdoor Fund helps us provide opportunity to our youth they may not experience in any other way. Further, by leveraging every dollar we receive, we can double or triple the amount invested in their experience” Says Craig Alderman of QUWF.
Not only does QUWF support youth fishing teams but they activate stewardship of the resource by having the participating youth join in pond restorations, stream clean up, water quality testing, lake cleanup, all planting ideas of involvement. “We hope to trigger an interest to preserve the resource through stewardship for the long term, not just a using of the resource” explains Christine Abmeyer who leads the fishing initiative with QUWF.
“We have to value every penny we receive, leverage it to dollars and invest in our conservation future at the local levels, where communities can support their youth and experience the benefits of getting involved first hand, and that is exactly what the Outdoor fund allows us to do” Alderman concludes.
