Mark Drury: Predicting Deer Movement with DeerCast

“Terry and I have always been fascinated by when and why deer move. Between our combined 70 years of chasing whitetails, we’ve finally cracked that code and exported it out of our heads and into this app. We’ve identified the key variables that influence deer across the THIRTEEN phases of season and wrapped them up into an algorithm that tells hunters when deer will be on the move where they hunt. We’ve always focused on helping people become more effective deer hunters. DeerCast does just that." - Mark Drury

Every fall, hunters across the country head afield in pursuit of whitetails. Though the game they chase is the same, the way they go about it and the tactics they use vary, as do success rates. Many whitetail tagging hopefuls are happenstance hunters, they set out, read the situation to the best of their ability, and then hope for the best. On the other end of the spectrum are the science-based hunters like Mark Drury. If you are a whitetail hunter, then you have undoubtedly heard the name Mark Drury before and you are familiar with Drury Outdoors and the popular television shows they produce like Bow Madness, Drury’s THIRTEEN and Critical Mass, all seen on Outdoor Channel. Mark, and his brother Terry Drury, have each spent more than 30 years in the field hunting and observing whitetail behavior and it is this experience that they draw on to predict deer movement with such success season after season. Mark Drury joins us this week to talk whitetail hunting and DeerCast, a comprehensive app they have developed to forecast deer movement.

So, what is DeerCast? It is an app that uses your local weather information, combined with the THIRTEEN phases of the whitetail season and all of Mark and Terry Drury’s wisdom, in order to create a custom deer movement forecast that is location specific. Whether you are a happenstance hunter or a science-based hunter, this app takes a lot of the guesswork out of determining deer movement. Mark explains that in order to make these kinds of predictions, 11 different weather influencers are built into the algorithm of the app. On an hour by hour basis, the DeerCast app looks at those 11 weather influencers and then adjusts them to the phase of the season you are in. Mark notes the interesting changes that happen with the progression of seasons and how the different weather influencers affect predictions differently throughout each phase. Mark says that this app is incredibly smart - to the extent that it knows when a buck is going to move before the buck knows. While this app can’t tell you exactly where to sit, it allows hunters to make a better educated guess on where to focus their efforts on the deer, based on the forecast provided.

The departure from average daily temperatures in your area can play a role in the overall deer activity with above normal temperatures suppressing deer movement and below normal temperatures increasing activity. With so many hunters afield hoping to bring home a buck, hunting pressure is a very real scenario that can alter deer movement. Excessive hunting pressure suppresses movement as whitetails seek cover to survive. Mark says that deer seek the cover of woods, brush and darkness when they are fearful, and especially trend toward the cover of darkness. While rutting behavior can bring them out from their beds, cover and even nocturnal routines, Mark cautions that excessive human pressure could shut down an entire deer herd. Another factor that can play into deer movement is the moon phase. Mark says that the moon is one of the eleven influencers used in the DeerCast app. As a general rule of thumb, Mark says that they see more daylight activity in and around the full moon than they do around the darker moon. He’ll explain how these moon phases suppress or increase deer movement and when to look for the bump or slump of activity as a result.

While an unfavorable forecast may not be what you were hoping to see on any given day, Mark says that the ability of the DeerCast app to predict this slump in behavior is actually a positive thing. Rather than going into a stand or blind, bumping deer and putting your scent out everywhere, Mark says this is a good time to scout instead of hunt. Mark will talk about using trail cameras for continuous scouting and how cameras play a vital role in his success each season. Finally, Mark will talk about stand and blind placement based on deer sign. Mark says that he positions himself in such a way that deer sign - trails, scrapes and rubs - are in an upwind position with his stand or blind along a fence, pasture edge, creek edge or another safe downwind position.

Tune in for an interesting and informative talk about deer movement and the factors that influence it. Plus, the DeerCast app, it’s deer movement forecasting capabilities and thousands of hours of Drury Outdoors content.

All-new episodes of Drury’s THIRTEEN can be seen every Tuesday night at 10 pm ET on Outdoor Channel. Following that, at 10:30 pm ET on Outdoor Channel, is new episodes of Critical MASS. Finally, the new season and episodes of Bow Madness air each and every Thursdayat 10 pm ET, again on Outdoor Channel.

#DeerWeek and Deer Hunting with Lee & Tiffany Lakosky

#DeerWeek is back for 2018 on Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel. For seven consecutive nights, beginning Monday, September 17th through September 23rd at 7 p.m. ET, deer hunting will take center stage on both networks. Hosting this celebration of deer hunting this year will be Lee & Tiffany Lakosky, hosts of CRUSH with Lee & Tiffany.

Lee and Tiffany Lakosky are widely known as fastidious whitetail managers, land managers and conservationists, notorious for the monster whitetails they tag each season. While much of their notoriety is based around whitetails, Lee and Tiffany hunt a plethora of different game species. Lee says nearly half of their episodes each year are centered around mule deer and elk hunts, noting that last year he took four elk and only two whitetails. Lee and Tiffany explain that they take about a month each year and hunt the west for sheep, mule deer, elk and mountain goats. The other eleven months of the year they spend working hard on their personal properties/farms, planting and maintaining food plots and creating ideal whitetail habitat.

Lee and Tiffany will talk about a recent DIY spot and stalk mule deer hunt in Utah where they both found tremendous success. Lee says that both he and Tiffany went into the hunt targeting specific bucks, but when Tiffany’s buck disappeared into thick cover they ended up relocating to his hunting spot where she ultimately shot the unique muley he had been after. Following her shot, Lee says he went back to Tiffany’s hunting spot and on the first stalk was able to harvest the buck she had initially been after. Although they don’t plant food plots and manage the land in Utah like they do on their home farms, Lee and Tiffany say there is still a management plan in place. Using age structure, and self-restraint, they only take deer that are at least 5 years old and preferably, 6 to 7 years old. Lee says he always has the future in mind and this year when he saw a couple big non-typicals that were about 5 years old, he decided to pass knowing that these bucks could reach their full and impressive potential with another year or two of growth. Spot and stalk mule deer hunting with a bow isn’t an easy task. Working to get within bow range of very evasive muleys is tough and it requires a certain skill set, a willingness to work and dedication to get it done. Lee says that it’s a tough hunt and that’s why he loves it, adopting a “the harder the better” kind of motto. He says that his goal is to shoot all 29 North American big game species and notes that every time you hunt something different, you learn something different to make you a better overall hunter. When bowhunting out west, he specifically notes the challenge of shooting longer distances and how they have become better shooters as a result of their western hunting experiences. While whitetail hunts on their properties only require 20 to 30 yard shots, or a bit further, they explain how accurately shooting 100+ yards in the west makes you a better all-around shooter.

Finally, Lee and Tiffany talk about raising the next generation of hunters, their two kids. Lee says as a kid he was obsessed with whitetails, and probably because growing up in northern Minnesota he didn’t see very many. Today, after a lot of hard work, the Lakosky’s have whitetail rich properties that most would envy. They say that their biggest concern, as well as biggest challenge, is to help their kids understand and appreciate the hard work that has gone into creating such successful properties. Looking to the future when their kids are ready to hunt, Lee says he wants his kids to hunt with a bow first. The discipline and practice it takes to become proficient with a bow paired with the patience it takes to get within bow range and ultimately to get a shot opportunity, is something that requires skill. Both Lee and Tiffany say that these are the kind of lessons that will not only make them better hunters and outdoorsmen and women, but more productive members of society, too. Tune in for a fun and informational talk with Lee and Tiffany Lakosky, hosts of CRUSH on Outdoor Channel, be sure to tune in every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET for new episodes.
