Hurricane Dorian Preps Underway Along Atlantic Coast

As slow-moving Hurricane Dorian continues to cross the Caribbean, the death toll has risen to at least five, and preparations are underway up the Atlantic coastline as states prepare for a hurricane that may make landfall in the U.S. as early as this morning. Travelers visiting Florida, Georgia or the Carolinas may find themselves stranded, especially as airlines and airports begin preparing for the storm. Delta cancelled all flights to/from the Bahamas Monday, citing extreme crosswind conditions and Fort Lauderdale, Orlando Melbourne, and Palm Beach International Airports all suspended service yesterday. Orlando International airport was scheduled to cease operations at 2 a.m. Eastern this morning

At this point, businesses along the coast are battening down their operations, moving mobile equipment and preparing for what could be days of disruptions. In addition to the expected winds and waves, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials are saying that Lake Okeechobee is “likely” to rise three feet or more from Dorian’s ran bands that are already lashing the south Florida coastline. In North Carolina, hurricane warnings are out and in preparations for evacuations, campgrounds, including NASCAR’s Bristol and Charlotte motor speedways, are opening at no charge for coastal residents fleeing Hurricane Dorian.
