Contact: Michelle Zellar, 906-293-5131

DNR offers Beyond BOW waterfowl-hunting workshop for women in Bay County

Women hoping to learn more about waterfowl hunting are invited to sign up for a free Beyond Becoming an Outdoors Woman workshop at the Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area in Bay County, Michigan.

“Scheduled for the weekend of Nov. 2-3, the program is for women that may have some previous experience and would like to expand or learn new skills and abilities,” BOW program coordinator Michelle Zellar said.

Ammunition, dinner and lunch will be provided. Overnight lodging will be the participants’ responsibility.

Daily drawings are held at the state wildlife area during waterfowl season for parties of up to four hunters. Workshop participants will register for the drawing in pairs (along with two mentors) and be issued a number. The numbers then are randomized, and when each number is called, the party will pick a hunting zone.

On Friday, participants will gain knowledge of waterfowl hunting techniques, basic waterfowl identification skills, general firearm safety and managed waterfowl hunt area procedures.

On Saturday, attendees will participate in an afternoon managed waterfowl hunt, through the drawing process. There will be two workshop participants and two experienced hunters per group for Saturday’s hunt.

Participants must be 18 or older, have some experience handling a shotgun or have taken a firearms class at a BOW program, and also have received Michigan hunter safety training. A Michigan base license, waterfowl license and federal migratory bird hunting stamp all are required and will be available for purchase on-site.

Enrollment is limited to eight. The deadline for registration is Oct. 30. This will be a rain, shine or snow event. Class information and registration materials are available at michigan.gov/bow.
