The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, a hunter-based nonprofit wildlife habitat conservation organization, seeks an experienced editor to create dynamic content across RMEF’s print, digital, TV and social platforms. Conceive, edit and write compelling features and departments that focus on elk hunting. Interesting and entertaining stories should highlight/celebrate the hunting experience while promoting ethical field behavior and critical thinking about hunting. Cultivate and work with freelance writers, RMEF staff, outdoor industry contacts and others. Work closely with senior editor to determine stories and determine the best-suited writer for each hunting department or feature. Work with outside contributors to monitor the evolution of each article, check for factual content and offer editing assistance along the way resulting in high-quality Bugle magazine pieces. Bachelor’s degree and demonstrated ability in journalism, creative writing or related field. Must have at least three years’ experience editing and writing stories which focus specifically on hunting and issues affecting hunting. Highly experienced in editorial planning critical. Job Summary:
Create dynamic content across print, digital, TV and social platforms. Highly experienced in editorial planning. Conceive, assign, select, edit and write content to extend across all media platforms to advance RMEF’s mission. Primary responsibilities include writing for Bugle magazine and producing video scripts and additional digital content for rmef.org’s Elk Network.
Essential Functions:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and demonstrated ability in journalism, creative writing or related field. Must have at least three years’ experience editing and writing stories which focus specifically on hunting and issues affecting hunting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Thorough knowledge and support of RMEF’s mission, goals and policies; including the biological, sociological and political elements that shape them.
2 Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
3. Ability to hear, accentuate and clarify a writer’s voice.
4. Firm understanding of what good writing is; ability to detect and correct problems, including proficiency of style and grammar.
5. Extensive knowledge of wildlife/wildlands conservation.
6. Able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
7. Ability to set and fulfill short- and long-term goals and priorities; must have the ability to meet established deadlines.
8. Excellent research and interviewing skills.
9. Commitment to fostering ethical hunting which honors the individual animal, the species, the land and the hunt.
10. Knowledge of and personal involvement in natural resource conservation.
11. Must demonstrate a personal interest in/commitment to hunting.
12. Must have excellent computer skills including various key software and programs.
Physical Demands: Must sit for long periods of time; use a computer extensively; reach forward and to the side; bend from both standing and sitting position. Some travel is required; may include plane, car, horse and foot.
