American Smallbore Shooting Association Championship Results

July 6th through the July 12th 2019. Cardinal Shooting Center, Marengo OH.

The ASSA recently concluded the Conventional Smallbore Prone, F-SBR and 3-Position championships at the Cardinal Center in Marengo Ohio.

6400 PRONE Championship

A 6400 Prone course of fire was conducted over 4 days with 2-man team matches being conducted on the 2nd day of irons and the 1st day of scope. The course of fire is 40 shots at 50 yards. 40 shots at 50 meters, The Dewar course 20 at 50 yards and 40 at 100 yards. And the final match of each day is 40 shots at 100 yards.

Paul Gideon of Gambier OH was the winner of the first daily aggregate prone match shooting a 1599 out of 1600 with 120x. On day 2 of the iron sights match Eric Gestl of Bethlehem PA was the match winner with 1598-115x. The combined two-day winner and recipient of the Joe Barnes Trophy plaque was Paul Gideon with a two-day aggregate score of 3193-232x.

The Iron Sights team match was won by the Putnam County Gun Club #1 of Eleanor West Virginia. Firing members Mitchell Nelson and Zachary Jackson posted a 795-47x in the 2-man Dewar course.

Day 3 started the Any Sights phase of the prone championship when competitors could shoot with telescopic sights. The 3rd daily aggregate was won by Phil Latzgo of Birdsboro PA posting a score of 1596-114x. The 4th daily aggregate was taken by Clark New Jersey resident Kevin Mulligan firing a 1598-118x.

The Any sights team match was won by the PA Toads. Firing member Stephen Angeli and Chris Keebler shot an aggregate score over the Dewar course of 797-55x.

The Team Aggregate Championship was won by the Putnam County Gun Club #1. Mitchell Nelson and Zachary Jackson posted a 1589-102x to win the championship.

The Any Sights aggregate champion and winner of the George Stidworthy trophy plaque, with a score of 3189-245x was Stephen Angeli of Hershey PA.

The 4-day 6400 aggregate winner and 2019 ASSA Prone Champion was Stephen Angeli of Hershey PA. Stephen stayed consistent over the 4-day match to fire a 6380-425x and claim the Tom Whitaker trophy plaque.

6400 F-SBR Championship

The F-Class Smallbore Rifle is similar to the full-bore F-Class competition in that competitors may shoot in the TR (Target Rifle) class from a bi-pod or the Open class where a front bench rest is used with a rear bag. All shooting is done with telescopic sights. The course of fire for the 6400 F-SBR match is identical to the conventional prone event with the difference being the targets used for F-SBR. The metric target A50, A51 and A33 is used with a scoring rings half the diameter of the conventional targets.

The first daily aggregate was won by David Pessall from Jonestown PA. David shot a 1594-128 on day 1.

On Day 2 David was again the winner, improving his score by 1 x from the previous day to shoot a 1594-129x.

Day 2 was also the team day for the F-SBR teams. The Double D's consisting of David Pessall and Doug Boyer put together a 769-56x of the Dewar course to claim the team win.

Day 3 was a continuation of the event and the leader board remained the same with David Pessall shooting a 1588-111x.

Day 4 came down to a tie between Sam Pagliari and Doug Boyer. Each shot a 1592-120x to require a Creedmoor tie breaker. By virtue of his 400-32x at the 100-yard match Sam Pagliari was the winner of the 4th daily aggregate.

The 6400 Championship aggregate score of 6362-489x allowed David Pessall to repeat as the ASSA F-SBR Champion. David was also the TR winner. Sam Pagliari was the OPEN class winner with a 6351-452x.

3-Position Championship

The conventional 3-Position championship was conducted over 3 days. The first day was shot with iron sights, the second day was shot with any sights, and day 3 was team day.

The course of fire is 40 shots prone, 40 shots standing and 40 shots kneeling for a possible 1200-point aggregate. The match is fired at 50 yards on the A23 target.

Day 1's winner of the irons sights 3-P championship was the United States Army Marksmanship Training Unit's Sgt. Patrick Sunderman. Sunderman shot a 1196-87x.

Day 2's winner of the any sights 3-P championship was Spc. Jared Desrosiers of the USAMU posting an 1195-75x.

The 2-day aggregate champion and winner of the Karen Monez Trophy Plaque is Sgt. Patrick Sunderman with an aggregate score of 2390-180x.

Sgt. Patrick Sunderman and Spc. Brandon Muske teamed up to win the iron sights and any sights team matches to capture the overall aggregate of the 2019 3-P Team matches.

Their irons sights score of 1196-80x eclipses the NRA Smallbore Rifle Outdoor Conventional Position (A-23 Target) Two Man Team - Metallic Sights record of 1190-68x.
Their any sights score of 1192-72x also beats the NRA Smallbore Rifle Outdoor Conventional Position (A-23 Target) Two Man Team - Any Sights record of 1189-62. Their combined score of irons and any was 2388-156x.
