JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) announces the opening of Deer Gun Season beginning November 17. More and more hunters will take to woods beginning this weekend in search of the elusive Mississippi White-tailed Deer.

“Mississippi continues to rank among the top states nationally for hunting white-tailed deer,” said MDWFP Executive Director, Dr. Sam Polles. “We enjoy seeing just how many Mississippians and others visiting our state invest their time and money to participate in conserving this abundant natural resource, but in order to enjoy this privilege hunters must make sure they have the proper licensing and equipment to do so.”

All MDWFP Conservation Officers will be out on patrol this opening weekend checking for valid hunting licenses and the proper use of safety equipment. “We want to make sure this hunting season is safe and enjoyable for all who participate,” said Col. Steve Adcock. “Hunting without a license is our number one violation year after year, so making sure hunters are licensed and are practicing safe hunting techniques is our top priority.” When hunting, always be sure of your target and what is beyond.

MDWFP would also like to urge hunters to share the excitement of hunting with a new hunter this season. Apprentice Hunting Licenses are available for first time hunters and allowable without hunter’s education if a licensed or exempt resident hunter at least twenty-one years of age accompanies the apprentice hunter when hunting.
