White Bear Lake, MN –— As National Fishing and Boating Week kicks off, so too does Clean Drain Dry Week, a public awareness campaign aimed at preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). Boaters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to take three simple actions every time they enjoy the water: Clean. Drain. Dry.
Aquatic invasive species—like zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil—pose a serious threat to local lakes, rivers, and native ecosystems. These hitchhikers can easily spread when watercraft and equipment are not properly cleaned after use.
“We’re asking boaters and anglers to be part of the solution,” said Zach Burnside, Invasive Species Program Manager of Wildlife Forever, “Prevention starts with personal responsibility, and it’s easier than you think.”
How to Participate
The effort is part of a growing nationwide movement to promote responsible outdoor recreation during one of the most popular times of year for boating and fishing.
Wildlife Forever through its funding partners is a national leader in developing, educating and engaging the public in programs to battle and avoid spreading invasive species. Additional programs include:
