The traditional June summer workshop for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Becoming an Outdoors Woman program is being moved for this year to Sept. 10-12 at a new location.

The BOW program gives women, 18 and older, an opportunity to improve their outdoors skills in a relaxed, noncompetitive atmosphere.

Coronavirus safety protocols forced cancelation of the BOW winter gathering in February and will require postponement of the summer event as well. In the interim, organizers conducted several Instagram Live events instructing women on various outdoor recreation skills.

“The fall event will consist of many of the usual class offerings, but they may be condensed, and class sizes may be smaller being cognizant of potential COVID health restrictions,” said DNR BOW coordinator Michelle Zellar.

The fall weekend workshop will still be held in Marquette County, but at the Upper Peninsula Bible Camp on Farmer Lake in Little Lake, near Gwinn, rather than at the Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay.

“We’re excited about the venue for this event, which is a new location for us,” Zellar said. “The accommodations are so welcoming, and the overall atmosphere is just wonderful.”

Registration materials for the fall event are expected to be available in early July.

Those signed-up for BOW email notifications will receive an email when event details and registration materials are available on the DNR website. In addition to the fall weekend workshop, various Beyond BOW events will be offered throughout the summer and fall in various locations across Michigan.
