GHSA Postpones High School Fishing GHSA Cup Event

THOMASTON, GA – The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) in conjunction with FLW and The Bass Federation (TBF), announced today the postponement of the GHSA Cup – a special kickoff tournament held for GHSA-member schools originally scheduled for March 21 at Lake Oconee in Buckhead, Georgia, in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The event will be rescheduled for a later date.

Earlier this month the organizations announced that Georgia had become the fifth state to partner with FLW and TBF in offering bass fishing as a sanctioned high school sport starting with the 2020-2021 school year.

Bass fishing is a co-ed sport allowing young men and women to compete side-by-side. There is no designated season, thus allowing students to compete year-round in both GHSA-sanctioned events and non-sanctioned tournaments. GHSA competition comprises four State Qualifying tournaments held in different areas of the state beginning in January of each year with the State Championship to be held in March or April. The schedule will be published every July/August of the new school year.

FLW, TBF and the GHSA recommends that everyone follow the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on everyday prevention of viral infection, which include:

  • Stay home when sick or living with a sick person.
  • Cover the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water.
  • Routinely clean frequently touched surfaces and objects.
  • Limit face-to-face contact.
  • Consult a healthcare provider as needed.
