A 21-year veteran of the Bassmaster Tour and winner of the 2014 Bassmaster Classic, Randy Howell of Guntersville, Alabama, is one of the top freshwater fishing professionals on the water today. He’s also been a longtime member of the Fish Monkey promotional staff. And when it comes to gloves, he says he feels, well, naked without it.
“I’ve gotten so used to wearing gloves when I fish that anytime I pick up a rod and make a few casts without them on, it just doesn’t feel right,” he says. “I really feel naked without them, as strange as that might sound.”
Howell started using fishing gloves back in his early days of tournament competition, but back then, gloves were a much different breed. “I was wearing gloves when I was fishing on a different tour where we handled a lot of bass—sometimes 20 or 30 a day—and it was rough on your hands. But back then, gloves were just like fabric with fingers sewn on them. They didn’t have any fit, and you couldn’t really feel the rod.”
Then he came across Fish Monkey just as the brand was launching at the ICAST industry show in Florida. “When I first put on those gloves, I thought, ‘Man, what a great product!’ They had the second-skin fit and moisture-wicking fabric that was super comfortable—you forget you’re even wearing them after about five casts. And they protect your hands from not only fish but also the sun. Really awesome product. They also rinse out well and dry quickly.”
Howell says his go-to gloves for warm weather are the Pro 365 Guide Glove and the Half Finger Guide Glove. “I like that the Half Finger has a little bit longer cuff and finger coverage, and the padding is a little different on both but they’re the best gloves I’ve found anywhere out there.”
And when the weather turns cool, he reaches for the Blocker. It’s a super-thin neoprene glove designed specifically for fishing. “It’s like a wetsuit for your hands,” Howell says. “It gets warmer when it’s wet and it conforms to the shape of your hand so it’s really comfortable, plus you can still feel everything while you’re fishing. This is perfect for those chilly, windy days on the water.” And for running the boat from spot to spot, he uses the heavy-duty Yeti glove for the ultimate in warmth and wind protection.
