Michigan DNR seeks public input on Trails Connection and Shoreline Access and Connectivity Plan for Bay City State Park

The public is invited to share ideas and input on a new Trails Connection and Shoreline Access and Connectivity Plan for Bay City State Park.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division will host a public meeting from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at Bangor Township Hall (Community Room), 3921 Wheeler Road in Bay City.

At the meeting, both components of the draft plan will be discussed:

  • The trails connection component will include potential Iron Belle Trail route alternatives and a feasibility analysis for each option.
  • The shoreline access and connection component will outline needed connections between the shoreline, day-use park amenities, campground, nonmotorized trails and future amenities, while identifying desired user experiences.

The final Trails Connection and Shoreline Access and Connectivity Plan likely will include trail connections, boat and beach access, permanent and temporary facilities, vehicle access and other future enhancements.

"Gaining public input and feedback is a critical step in any thoughtful plan development process," said Scott Cook, DNR Saginaw Bay regional field planner. "This plan will assist the DNR in guiding future enhancements at Bay City State Park."

The meeting will begin with a presentation of the draft plan, followed by a formal Q&A period and an open house where people can review the planning materials, provide comments and talk with the project team.

One of the action goals that was born out of the phase 2 general management plan for?Bay City State Park was to develop a complementary plan that would help identify desired visitor experiences and connections between the lakeshore, existing park amenities and trails. The general management plan, approved in fall 2018 after a public input process, helps define long-range planning and a management strategy for the park.
