Arizona: Explore What's Above-Ground at Kartchner Caverns State Park

Explore What's Above-Ground at Kartchner Caverns State Park

PHOENIX – Discover all the above-ground adventures at Kartchner Caverns State Park during fun upcoming events.

Join a park ranger monthly through May for an exciting journey along the Ocotillo Trail, a challenging 3.25-mile trek through the foothills of the Whetstones. It’s a great time of year to enjoy a southern Arizona park, while the sun is out and the weather is cool! Along the trail, you’ll experience gorgeous views of the surrounding mountain ranges, including the Dragoon, Huachuca, Whetstone, Rincon, and Winchester mountains. Along with the incredible views, you’ll catch sight of amazing birds, desert plants (including wildflower blooms), and other wildlife!

On April 6, explore the sky during a Star Party and solar viewing. Kartchner Caverns was designated as an International Dark Sky Park in 2017, and the Huachuca Astronomy Club will have telescopes on hand to let your adventure take you the stars. The solar viewing begins at 2 p.m. There is no additional cost to visitors who took a cave tour that day or campers in the park.

Ocotillo hikes will be held on March 30, April 27, and May 25 at 10 a.m. To hike the trail, make sure to bring plenty of water and dress appropriately, including wearing sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Dogs are welcome!
