To help celebrate 100 years of Michigan state parks, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host a centennial kickoff event geared toward families in the Grand Traverse region at what is considered Michigan's first state park.

The Centennial Summer Fun Open House and Scavenger Hunt at Interlochen State Park Saturday, May 18, will be a jam-packed event filled with opportunities to get information on local outdoor adventure and summer learning opportunities. Everything takes place at the park noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Michigan state parks centennial is centered around the state Legislature's formation of the Michigan State Park Commission May 12, 1919. Interlochen State Park, located at 4167 M-137 in Interlochen, is considered Michigan’s first state park because it was the first to be transferred to the commission.

The afternoon offers many fun options:

• An interactive scavenger hunt guiding families on a learning journey that explores summer adventure and learning opportunities available through local agencies. There also are opportunities to win prizes.
• The first 500 participating families in the scavenger hunt will receive special-edition centennial canvas totes, courtesy of Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Care Network of Michigan.
• A range where kids can try their hand at archery.
• A hands-on "Touch the Trucks" display, where kids of all ages can see and touch some of the DNR’s biggest equipment used to maintain parks, stock fish, enforce laws and fight fires.
• A special treat: birthday s'mores.
