Men’s Prone Team Wins Silver at ISSF World Championship
CHANGWON, South Korea – The Men’s Prone Team of three-time Olympic medalist Matt Emmons, two-time Olympian Michael McPhail and 2016 Olympian Lucas Kozeniesky won a team silver medal today in the 50m Men’s Prone Rifle event on the third day of competition at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship in Changwon, South Korea.
The three men competed in the Elimination relays today and all three will advance to tomorrow’s Qualification round. The team medal is based on the combined score of the three athletes from a country in this event during the Elimination round.
“Michael had a brilliant match, knowing they could be in contention and facing some of the most variable, fastest and continually changing conditions,” said National Rifle Coach Bob Foth. Facing choppy winds throughout the match, Emmons (Browns Mills, New Jersey) and Kozeniesky (Fairfax, Virginia) anxiously watched McPhail’s performance on the following relay to the end where he would post the highest score of his relay (624.5), giving the U.S. enough points to secure the silver medal.
Germany won the gold medal by 1.5 points for a score of 1869.5. China won the bronze medal with a score of 1866.8. The medals for this event will be presented tomorrow, along with the winner of the Men’s Prone Rifle individual event.
Emmons and McPhail (Darlington, Wisconsin/U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit) were also on the 50m Men’s Prone Rifle Team that also won gold at the World Championship in 2010 and 2006. Emmons won gold in 2002 and bronze in 2010 in the individual 50m Men’s Prone Rifle event at the World Championship.
Today’s team silver medal brings the United States’ medal count to three with the Men’s Trap Team silver medal and Junior Women’s Trap bronze medals that were awarded yesterday. The 50m Women’s Prone Rifle Team of Sagen Maddalena, Randi Loudin and Mackenzie Martin also shot their Elimination round today to finish in 20th place as a team with a combined score of 1828.3. Maddalena (Groveland, California) shot a score of 611.0. Martin (Murray, Kentucky) shot a score of 608.7 and Loudin (Post Falls, Idaho) shot a score of 608.6. None of these women will advance beyond the Elimination round.
In the Junior Mixed Air Pistol Team event, the team of Sarah Choe (Los Angeles, California/373) and Jack Leverett III (Bainbridge, Georgia/380) finished in 12th place with a combined score of 753. The team of Kellie Foster (Rockdale, Texas/373) and Kyler Swisher (Palmyra, Pennsylvania/363) finished in 30th place with a combined score of 736.
The top finisher for the United States in Women’s Air Pistol was 2012 Olympian Sandra Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Alabama) who finished in 26th place with a score of 572. Alexis Lagan (Boulder City, Nevada) finished in 48th place with a score of 567 and Nathalia Tobar (East Northport, New York) finished in 70th place with a score of 561.
In Men’s Free Pistol, James Hall (Anniston, Alabama) finished in 61st place with a score of 528. Richard Gray (Fredericksburg, Virginia) finished in 62nd place with a score of 528 and Brian Kim (Los Angeles, California) finished in 65th place with a score of 503.

Tomorrow’s action at the World Championship will include Qualification in 50m Men’s Prone Rifle, Junior Air Rifle Mixed Team, Junior Women’s Air Pistol and the first day of Women’s Trap and Junior Men’s Trap competition.
