State parks in south-central Montana move to winter schedules and restrictions during this slower time of year. See below for details on each state park in the region.
Chief Plenty Coups State Park
Chief Plenty Coups State Park has moved to its winter schedule. Under the winter schedule, the park will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the park visitor center and chief’s house are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on those days. The park is closed Mondays and Tuesdays during the winter.

Cooney State Park
Cooney State Park is open every day of the year. However, some park amenities are limited in the winter. Drinking water and flush toilets are not available and boat docks have been pulled until spring 2026. Camping will be available on a first-come, first-served basis only at Red Lodge, Fisherman’s Point and Marshall Cove campgrounds. The Cottonwood campground is closed for camping this winter. Electricity will remain on throughout the winter. Park staff can be contacted by calling 406-445-2326 or by visiting the park office at 86 Lake Shore Road, Roberts, MT 59070.

Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park
Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park is open every day of the year but is only open to walk-in access for the winter.

Lake Elmo State Park
Lake Elmo State Park is open every day of the year with some limited amenities. The comfort station at the beach and large pavilion are closed for the season, but the latrine located at the boat ramp will remain open year-round. The upper parking lot at the beach will close for the season Dec. 1. Walk-in access to this area will remain open, and parking is available year-round at the FWP office and boat ramp.

Pictograph Cave State Park
Pictograph Cave State Park has moved to its winter schedule. Under the winter schedule, the park will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the park visitor center will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on those days. The park is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in winter and will also be closed on the following winter holidays: Thanksgiving, Nov. 27; Christmas Eve, Dec. 24; Christmas Day, Dec. 25; New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31; and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.
