Flares Important Asset for Boaters in Freeport, TX, Rescue

HOUSTON — The Coast Guard rescued two boaters from their disabled vessel near the jetties in Freeport, Texas, late Friday evening.

Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a report of two flares sighted near the Freeport jetties just before midnight.

A Coast Guard Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew and a Coast Guard Station Freeport 45-Foot Response Boat-Medium boat crew were launched.

Once on scene, the Freeport boat crew located a disabled 33-foot vessel with two people aboard drifting toward the rocks of the jetties. The vessel was put into tow by the Freeport boat crew and towed to the Freeport Marina.

“This rescue was possible because these boaters were prepared with the necessary safety equipment,” said Chief Warrant Officer Brooke Milstead, Sector Houston-Galveston command duty officer. “I can’t put enough emphasis on how crucial it is to have the proper safety equipment aboard your vessel. They save lives.”

There were no reports of injuries.
