RIVERTON, Wyoming -- Buffalo once roamed the open plains from Canada to Mexico in numbers so great that early explorers could not count them. In fact, the herds were once described as "number-numberless," and "the country was one black robe." The American bison earned the nickname of 'thunder of the plains'. However, with the immigration of white settlers, the bison's number's dwindled almost to the point of extinction.
On December 8, 1905, William Hornaday, with the assistance of Theodore Roosevelt, formed the American Bison Society. Although the Society discontinued its programs in 1930, they were able to establish a number of wildlife preserves, and with the help of private bison owners they were able to stock a number of parks and preserves around the country.
In 1995 the American Bison Association (actually formed in 1975) and the National Buffalo Association (chartered in 1966) merged to become the National Bison Association. They currently have nearly 1,500 members, including Hi Mountain Seasonings. Members come from all 50 states and 10 foreign countries.
This organization is dedicated to building a profitable, sustainable market for producers of all sizes, and all types. They work to promote all facets of production, preservation and marketing of bison, which are now estimated to be 150,000 in population on public and private land. The National Bison Association activities and services serve to better inform and educate members and the general public about bison.
"This magnificent species has always been a part of our history. By supporting the National Bison Association, Hi Mountain Seasonings not only insures that they are a part of our future, but also helps to educate about the many benefits of this species as a part of America's future," stated Kimberly Hummel, owner of Hi Mountain Seasonings.
