The top male and female high school student archers who participated March 29 in the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) National Archery In The Schools Program (NASP) state tournament each received their choice of a lifetime hunting or fishing license.
Chantelle Skarda of North Campus High School in White Bear Lake and Ryan Dumm of Grand Rapids High School finished first in the individual high school competition. In addition to the lifetime licenses, Skarda and Dumm also received Genesis bows.
“Nearly 600 students from throughout the state participated in the tournament,” said Kraig Kiger, DNR shooting sports program administrator. “NASP keeps involving more schools, more students and more families in a safe and supervised activity that can last a lifetime.”
Cody Rupert of Osakis Middle School was the top male and Jordan Tawyea of Mountain Iron/Buhl Middle School was the top female in the middle school age group. Top elementary age group finishers were Priscella Sias of Pioneer Home School Association in Grand Rapids and Colin Palm of Grandview Middle School in Mound. The top five male and female individuals in the elementary, middle school and high school divisions were awarded medals for their efforts and earned an opportunity to attend the NASP National Championships May 10 in Louisville, Ky.
North Campus High School in White Bear Lake took first place in the National High School Division. Jackson Middle School finished first in the National Middle School Division. Hilltop Primary School in Mound took first place in the National Elementary School Division. Teams finishing first earned an opportunity to participate in the NASP National Championships.
In the State Division, Grand Rapids High School finished first in the high school age group, Robert J. Elkington Middle School in Grand Rapids took first in the middle school age group and Hill City finished first in the elementary age group.
Each team top team in each age group of the national and state divisions received a trophy. Plaques were awarded to teams that finished in second and third place.
Students in grades 4-6 competed in the elementary age group. Students in grades 7-8 competed in the middle school age group. Students in grades 9-12 competed in the high school age group.
White Bear Lake’s Jack Wachlarowicz was selected by DNR staff as NASP Coach of the Year. Kiger said. Wachlarowicz won the award because of his program’s involvement of White Bear Lake students in a wide variety of activities and his ability to maintain a well-rounded and respected NASP program. Wachlarowicz will serve on the committee that selects next year’s coach of the year winner.
