Pepco Holdings Earns NETF Energy for Wildlife Award

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The National Wild Turkey Federation presented Pepco Holdings, an Exelon Company, with the prestigious Energy for Wildlife National Achievement Award at the 42nd Annual Convention and Sport Show in Nashville.

Pepco Holdings is a conservation partner of the NWTF’s Energy for Wildlife program, which aims to enhance wildlife habitat on land owned, managed or influenced by energy companies. The Pepco Holdings utilities include Pepco in Maryland and the District of Columbia, Delmarva Power in Delaware and Maryland, and Atlantic City Electric in southern New Jersey

The NWTF determined this year’s award winners based on how their work strengthens the organization’s Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative.  Pepco Holdings has engaged in several different aspects of the Energy for Wildlife program and has helped further the NWTF mission through conservation education and philanthropic sponsorships.

Pepco Holdings was the marquee sponsor for the inaugural Delmarva Sporting Clay Shoot at Owings Station, Delaware, which is in Delmarva Power’s service area.  Utility contractors, friends of the industry and NWTF members were invited to shoot sporting clays while learning about the wildlife benefits of using Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM).  A presentation emphasizing IVM principles and wildlife stewardship was well received by participants. Pepco Holdings recognizes that utility right of ways (ROWs) provide important early successional habitat for imperiled wildlife species such as pollinators and encourages contractors to follow IVM principles when managing ROWs.

Pepco Holdings has been a supporter of local chapter banquets within the company’s service area and continues to do so.  In 2017, Pepco Holdings provided a philanthropic donation and hosted a question and answer session at the Lower Delaware Chapter Banquet in Georgetown, Delaware.

"Pepco Holdings' commitment to conservation of habitat and wildlife is important in our efforts to achieve our Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative goals,” said NWTF CEO Becky Humphries. “Pepco Holdings deserves the NWTF Energy for Wildlife Award as it is truly making a difference by providing wildlife habitat enhancements across its service areas."

About the National Wild Turkey Federation
When the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in 1973, there were about 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. After decades of work, that number hit an historic high of almost 7 million turkeys. To succeed, the NWTF stood behind science-based conservation and hunters’ rights. The NWTF Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative is a charge that mobilizes science, fundraising and devoted volunteers to raise $1.2 billion to conserve and enhance more than 4 million acres of essential wildlife habitat, recruit at least 1.5 million hunters and open access to 500,000 acres for hunting.
