GREENLAND, N.H. -- The Great Bay Discovery Center is seeking volunteer educators to present cultural history programs to school children this fall. To get involved, sign up for the fall educator training to be held on September 6, 2017, at the Hugh Gregg Coastal Conservation Center, 89 Depot Road in Greenland, N.H. The training runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and includes a complete run-through of the school program, which is offered from September through October to students throughout the Seacoast region and beyond.

No experience is necessary to become a volunteer educator. All programs are mornings only and run about three hours. Volunteers sign up for dates that are convenient for them.

The training will prepare volunteer educators for teaching small groups of school children (grades 1-5) about the cultural history of the Great Bay Estuary and the natural resources found in the region. Educators lead a variety of lessons throughout the grounds. A favorite of students is "The Trail of the Arrowhead," a 45-minute journey through the forest and salt marsh along the Center's new boardwalk. Students sample turkey jerky and smoked salmon; learn about wampum trade and waterfowl migrations; and gather in a birch bark native fishing encampment. Other stops include a tour of the special collections artifact room, a simulated archaeology dig, and a lesson on vessels of the Piscataqua Region.

The Great Bay Discovery Center is managed by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and is the Education Headquarters for the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, a state and federal partnership between Fish and Game and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
